Their is something magical about skimming over a clear tequila colored skinny water flat deep in the estuaries of the Gulf Coast. You must experience that moment to believe it. Most in the boating community have never experienced it because they don't know where to find a boat that can go that shallow. If you know where to look they are quite plentiful. Shoalwater is the #1 name in shallow water fishing, which is why Texas Marine began selling these boats. They have earned that solid reputation as being the premier manufacturer of this style boat through a lot of hard work, quality control and careful attention to the details. Texas Marine stocks more Shoalwater boats than any other dealer in the nation.
The Shoalwater Story
Shoalwater boats are by far the most popular boat brand, along the lower Texas coast. When fishing the bay, with a buddy, it offers the most cutting edge modern technology and innovation available for fishing skinny water. This can be a huge asset because it is a specific type of boat capable of skimming across some of the shallowest backwater flats imaginable. The lower estuaries of the Texas Gulf Coast, near Port O'Connor, are just such a place. That is why Shoalwater located the manufacturing company there and developed these famous flat boats. They can be "launched and run in a mud puddle," as one skinny water forum recently put it. A heavier boat would bog down creating a slow take off in this type water, forcing you to poll the boat. Polling a heavy boat to fish the flats will wear out even the most determined anger. Light boats, like Shoalwater, are much more productive in these waters. Just ask Bud Rowland, who caught a 15 ½ lb. Speckled Trout on a 16-pound tippet fly rod, while polling his boat. He was sightcasting near a spoil bank in the lower Laguna Madre when this 37 ½" monster hit his home-tied fly. It earned him a Texas and World record.
Shoalwater Boats Construction
Lightweight boats are all about the hull and the materials they are made with. Shoalwater Boats are the absolute best at producing these valuable little gems. All Shoalwater boats have a center console and they feature a tunnel hull support system to assist with running in shallow water. These boats perform just as well in deep water, however. They also give very smooth, stable and dry rides. They are excellent for skiing and family fun, but Dad still gets his fishability. These boats can flow in about 8" of water. The hull on their Catamaran series features a dual shaped bow for taking a pounding. It can maintain a nearly flat stern during rough seas. This particular design allows for the best of both worlds, rough seas or skinny bays. Also the rolled gunnels provide splash down for extremely dry ride and an extra lift. All Shoalwater boats are made with large casting decks, on the bow and stern. They have 360-degree fishability, tons of storage, plenty of rodholders and livewells.
Many Texas Marine customers come in to buy a Shoalwater boat from us with dreams of the Galveston Bay Complex on their minds. Bays are, hands down, the best fishing destinations on the entire Gulf Coast. Galveston Bay is a vital estuary for the United States and the largest in Texas. Estuaries are basically the nurseries of the ocean, where most fish start their life. This bays most valuable resource is the numerous finfish residing there. A Shoalwater boat will get you back into the thousands of nutrient rich salt marsh incubators, spanning over 600 square miles throughout the bay. These nurseries make it a veritable "Garden of Eden" for the 162 species of fish who reside there. For the most part you can only get to them in a skinny water boat. Texas bays offer the "Big 3," as they are affectionately known to Gulf coast anglers. This would be Redfish, Specks and Flounder. They are so popular due to their exceptional taste and how fun they are to catch.
These days, Bay boats have also become a hot commodity with the bass fishing community. Bay boats are so versatile that they can be utilized quite efficiently in fresh water. Fishing a Bay boat in freshwater is a bit tricky. You may have to do some rigging on your own to make it completely accommodating for bass fishing, but that too depends on the angler. Installing railing on the boat for trolling rodholders and bimini tops for hot days just make lake fishing easier; it's definitely the way to go. Shoalwater boats make great all-purpose boats that any crossover angler could want. They work in the largest lakes and reservoirs, rivers (like the Mississippi) and private lakes. They are able to meet any demand except the open ocean. Heck, you can even rig some of these Bay boats up for hunting alligators. They are low profile, inshore fishing boats. Shoalwater boats are intended for protected coastal waters because of their construction, in contrast to the open ocean. However, this type construction with rolled edges and flat decks are just as effective at the lake, inshore and offshore. They are quite adept at all of the shallowest inshore tasks and can be called on for almost anything. They are superbly engineered to fit your salt or freshwater lifestyle.
